Professional Development Division

Since 1972, The Children's Center at Caltech (CCC) has been offering high quality child care and education for children ages six month to six years. In 2000, our research lead us to adopt STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) curricula as a focus of our early childhood program. As leaders in STEM Early Childhood education, we launched ECSTEM in 2011, and host an annual conference bringing together educators, policy makers, researchers and other vested community stakeholders to address the needs of our youngest citizens.

Due to the overwhelming demand for tours of our facilities, and requests for professional growth workshops, we have formed a Professional Development Division (PDD) that arranges tours, on-site visits and workshops at the CCC.

Form and Function: Engineering Design Process

Learn about The Engineering Design Process and how 4 and 5 year old children have implemented its principles into their everyday play. Our documentation will demonstrate how children's sense of exploration, critical thinking, and social skills have evolved as they plan, create, and test solutions to engaging activities. This workshop will help you incorporate the steps of The Engineering Design Process into STEM based play for your classroom.

Saturday, June 25, 2022 (9-12pm)
Presenters:  Jose Osorio, Lead Teacher and Richard Ponce, Senior Teacher

      Splashing Through STEM

Children are born with natural curiosity to explore the world around them. Learn how toddlers gain knowledge about Earth Science through explorations with water. All aspects of STEM will be covered while investigating how a group of children explored water and its properties. Get inspired with new curriculum possibilities and activities that you can implement with your infants and toddlers.

Saturday, July 23, 2022 (9-12pm)
Presenters: Marlene Garcia, Lead Teacher  and Tricia Lau, Lead Teacher

Scale and Structure: Engineering

Dive into a yearlong exploration of how a 3-4 year old classroom engaged in engineering to gain a deeper understanding of scale and structure. Detailed evidence will show how each child in the classroom discovered and investigated the different characteristics and properties of structures through the use of various materials.
